An Economist Opens an Improv Theatre

How improv skills help with business, management, and entrepreneurship

What do economics, entrepreneurship, and improv have in common? More than you might think.

I’m James Tierney, an economics educator turned entrepreneur who opened an improv theatre in State College, PA. In this 30-60 minute interactive session, I share how the skills that drive great improv, including adaptability, collaboration, and active listening, are also the very skills that fuel entrepreneurial success, leadership, and innovation.

This isn’t a lecture. It’s a hands-on, high-energy experience that leaves students with actionable strategies for their startups, classes, and careers.

From Stage to Startup Success

The lessons I learned from improv didn’t just help me open a theatre; they’ve fueled the growth of my education business, Tierney Education.

Today, my wife and I run the business full-time, and we’re in the process of expanding to new locations. Improv taught me how to adapt when things didn’t go as planned, collaborate with others, and build opportunities brick-by-brick. Those lessons apply whether you’re on stage, pitching investors, or leading a startup team.

Improv taught me how to adapt, collaborate, and build opportunities brick-by-brick. Skills that drive success in any venture.
